		<description><![CDATA[BIRLEY - This family lived at the Head of the Lake (Glenorchy) from the start of the goldrush in 1862. They built and operated the &#039;Mount Earnslaw Hotel&#039; and were at the forefront of the development of the area as a tourist destination through the 1880s. Henry Birley (Hartley) was involved with the early exploration of the area, mountaineering, gold and scheelite mining, &#039;Arcadia&#039; and the Lakes District Council. Families related by marriage are HOOD (Macetown), DUNNERY, DAVIDSON &amp; HARTLEY. Any information or images that could be added to that already held would be most welcome.
