HARTLEY – Any information on a Mr or Mrs Hartley, living at the Head of the Lake or in the Queenstown area from 1862 onwards would be most welcome. Contact – Bruce (blinking@vodafone.co.nz)
BIRLEY – This family lived at the Head of the Lake (Glenorchy) from the start of the goldrush in 1862. They built and operated the ‘Mount Earnslaw Hotel’ and were at the forefront of the development of the area as a tourist destination through the 1880s. Henry Birley (Hartley) was involved with the early exploration of the area, mountaineering, gold and scheelite mining, ‘Arcadia’ and the Lakes District Council. Families related by marriage are HOOD (Macetown), DUNNERY, DAVIDSON & HARTLEY. Any information or images that could be added to that already held would be most welcome.
